Few people are aware of this, but Turkey was once home to a fully functioning squadron of Fw-190As, serving alongside allied stalwarts like the Spitfire and American P40s!
In total 72 aircraft were provided to Turkey in exchange for key raw materials needed by the German war machine. These aircraft were close to Luftwaffe standard, with the main variation being the removal of the 20mm cannons.
Here is an excellent summary provided by the World war 2 after World war 2 site.
The fate of these aircraft is shrouded in mystery. Some say they were buried, some that they were destroyed as part of an arrangement with the USA (post war). Regardless it is exciting that there is a Flugwerk (FW) project underway to recreate a Turkish Focke Wulf!
Here's a link to the feature about the progress of this project.
We really hope that the rumours about buried aircraft are true and one day them will unearth a decent number of airframes. It would be a find worthy of Indiana Jones!
